Match report
Atherstone under 13s capped a remarkable season with a comfortable win in the Warwickshire County Final at Ratcliffe Road on Sunday morning.
Atherstone won the toss and asked Dorridge to bat first and a disciplined bowling performance by the hosts kept the run rate down. Despite a watchful 25 by Dorridge skipper Nick Hooper, good spin bowling by the Atherstone spin-trio of Matt Clements (3-13). Isaac Jeffs (3-21) and Callum Wordsworth (1-15) meant that the visitor’s innings never got into full stride.
Some excellent fielding and catching by Atherstone kept the pressure on and then opening bowlers George Webb (1-15) and James Ray (2-12) finished the innings off in the last over with Dorridge being dismissed for 83.
Atherstone’s reply stuttered to 30-3 against a hostile opening spell by Johnny Allen but the fourth wicket pair of James Ray and Isaac Jeffs held their nerve. Both batsmen produced a display of clean strokeplay in a stand of 52 which took the Adders to the brink of victory, Ray finishing with an undefeated 26 while Jeffs departed for an excellent 33 with only 2 required for victory.
Ray collected the winning runs with 4.1 overs to spare to give the Adders a measure of revenge for their Warwickshire Cup Final defeat at the hands of the same opposition but also to complete a remarkable run to the trophy, including as it did wins against 4 sides above Atherstone in the Birmingham/Warwickshire club cricket ‘pyramid’.
