YEAR 4 CONTINUOUS CRICKET FINAL

The Warwickshire Cricket Boards Year 4 Continuous Cricket County Final Day was held at The County Ground again this year providing participants with a memorable opportunity of playing at Edgbaston following in the footsteps of their local hero’s such as Ian Bell.  Schools initially participated in a local festival at their nearest cricket club with over 6000 children taking part across the county in this stage of the competition, the winners of each local round were then invited to the County finals to represent their local area.  The day consisted of fielding skills in the morning followed by three matches of continuous cricket in the afternoon.  The focus of the competition is to enthuse the youngsters about the game of cricket and ensure everybody is able to get involved.

Two extremely talented sides produced a magnificent final with St Josephs posting a very challenging total of 258 in the first innings. Some fantastic stroke play and clever running from Birchfield Primary in the second innings meant they were always just slightly ahead of the required run rate and enabled them to finish on a score of 268 at the close of their innings.

SALTLEY SCHOOL WIN DOCKER SHIELD

Saltley School’s Under 15s won the prestigious Docker Shield at the County Ground, Edgbaston on 11th September 2007. Their opponents were local rivals Small Heath.

Small Heath struggled from the start against some accurate Saltley bowling. Wickets fell steadily to Akbar, Alam and Raja. The latter was the pick finishing with 4 for 6. Small Heath were bustled out for 57. Saltley responded very positively and sped to victory by eight wickets, Anwar finishing on 26*.

It was great that the tradition of holding the Docker final at Edgbaston was revived.

The Docker Shield has been going since 1886 and is reputed to be the oldest schools’ cricket competition in the world.
